National Park Eifel
The Parks motto is "Let nature be nature". Follow the black woodpeckers call into the “Jungle of Tomorrow”. Enjoy the thrilling views over three water reservoirs of the Eifel region or relax while hiking through romantic stream valleys and impressive beech forests. The Park offers unique hikes and numerous activities adressing all ages. Additionally, our programm addresses all our visitors certainly including handicapped people.
Three visitor centers, so called National Park - Gates in Schleiden-Gemuend, Simmerath-Rurberg, in the train station of Heimbach and in Monschau-Höfen, display interesting exihibitions combined with comprehensive touristic information. From here, you can discover the National Park for example by joining one of the guided tours (soon under “Experiencing Nature”).
Comprising about 110 square kilometers, the Eifel National Park has been founded on the 1st of January 2004 and is the 14th National Park in Germany. It is located in the central mountain range of the northern Eifel region. Due to its neighbouring belgic border, it represents the most western National Park in Germany. Large areas of decidious forests with deep reaching river valleys characterise the Northern part of the Park. Endulge in the rushing streams and Yellow Daffodils in the southern areas during spring.
Stretching over 33 square kilometers, the district Dreiborner Hochfläche (Dreiborn plateau) is accessible since 1st of January 2006. This whole area has served as military training areas “Vogelsang” for a period of 60 years. Water such as the rivers Urft and Rur, forests as the endemic and protected beech forests and the genuine wildernis are home for rare plant and animal species.
The Eifel National Park counts about 460 endangered animal and plant species. About 1.300 beetle species were discovered in our forests. Red deer, wild cats, beavers, black storchs, eagle owls and even wall – lizzards inhabit the region. Regarding vegetation, there is one particular plant fascinating our visitors each spring: the Yellow Daffodils, creating yellow carpets of flowers. You will soon bee able to find more information about the prevailing nature under “Nature/ Landscapes”, “Ecosystems”.
